Enquiries about estimates and other matters can only be made up to 6 p.m. on Thursday 9th March. SECURITY

 

Bags and large coats are not allowed in the viewing areas. Many of the items can only be viewed under steward supervision. Other security surveillance will be in place.

LOT    DESCRIPTION

 

1 *   RHYMNEY RAILWAY ENAMEL SIGN: “Fire Buckets (plus eight lines of text)” in red lettering on white.  15¾” x 12” with a little chipping around screwholes, otherwise good.

 

2 *   CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS/VALE OF RHEIDOL RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP with brass plate on reducing cone “Cam. Ry” and plate on body “Per. Way Vale of Rheidol Rys.”, the makers Name “Jones & Foster” is stamped in the lens cone.  Brass rimmed bevel-edged glass.  Complete with all glasses, unmarked reservoir, burner and reflector.  Original unrestored condition.

 

3 *   STEEL SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “Newport – Haven St 19” from an ex-Isle of Wight Central Railway section between Ryde and Newport closed in 1966.  Rounded end with triangular cut-out.  Ex-section condition with slight rusting

 

4 *   TOTEM: DERBY ROAD BR (E) half-flanged dark blue with good colour and shine.  One or two edge chips only, VGC otherwise.  An ex-GER station on the branch to Felixstowe opened in 1877.  A rare totem seen only twice previously at auction, the last in 1990.

 

5 *       BR (M) fully flanged ENAMEL DOORPLATE: “Station Master.”  Good colour and shine, but lettering a little stained.  Small repainted chips around screwholes only.

 

6 *   SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: “45163” as carried by ex-LMS 4-6-0 5MT loco 5163 built at Armstrong Whitworth in 1935 Works No. 1204.  Became 45163 at Nationalisation.  A long-time Carlisle Kingmoor engine withdrawal came in May 1965.  Restored front and back.  A Horwich casting with the number H9279 visible on the back.

 

7 *   ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Nasmyth Wilson & Co Limited No. 1646 – 1937 Patricroft Manchester” from Indian State Railways 2-6-2T Loco No. 32073, originally Bengal & North Western, then North Eastern “T” class.  One of the last Nasmyths to be built.  Triangular shaped 14½” x 5½” in ex-loco condition.

 

8 *   SHEDPLATE: 6C BIRKENHEAD (MOLLINGTON STREET) (1950 – September 1963, later 8H) CROES NEWYDD (WREXHAM) (September 1963 – June 1967).  A scarce example in unrestored condition.

 

9 *   GWR Tyers mahogany cased Train Describing BLOCK INSTRUMENT thought to be from Stapleton Road Signal Box Bristol.  The front top segmented dial has the labels: “Avonmouth Via Henbury, South Wales, Standish & Yate, Badminton, Severn Beach Via Pilning LL, Stoke Gifford, Filton Jcn Only” with four blank spaces.  The bottom dial, which mimics most of the locations in the top dial, has holes for a peg to be inserted which activates a clockwork mechanism and the appropriate description is passed to the next box.  A label inside indicates that the instrument was last serviced in 1934.  A very rare instrument in VGC.

 

10 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: “5922” from the GWR “4900 Hall” 4-6-0 loco “CAXTON HALL” built at Swindon in May 1933 to Lot 281.  The loco spent many years at Swindon until transferred to Oxford in October 1961 from where withdrawn in January 1964.  The hall is a public building in London’s Westminster.  Restored front and back.

 

11 * CAST-IRON TRESPASS NOTICE: “GC & MRy Trespassers on This Property Will be Prosecuted.”  20” x 12” GCR pattern with scalloped corners.  Unrestored.

 

12 * TOTEM: CLAPHAM JUNCTION BR (S) fully flanged green with deep colour and shine in excellent condition.  An ex-LSWR station opened in May 1838.  Surely one of the most desirable “junction” names?

 

13 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “North British Locomotive Company Ltd. Glasgow 1943 No. 25063” as carried by the ex-WD Austerity 2-8-0 loco numbered 77192.  Ex-works in August 1943 it went immediately on loan to the LNER until December 1944 when it returned to the WD and wasput into storage until April 1949.  While in store it was purchased by BR in December 1948 becoming 90171.  A long-time Rose Grove loco from where it was withdrawn in July 1965 and cut up by T.W. Ward at Killamarsh.  Diamond shaped, 14¼” x 6¾  in good, ex-loco condition.

 

14 * BR (NE) ENAMEL DOORPLATE: “Ladies Waiting Room” (on two lines) in tangerine with white lettering.  18” x 6” flangeless.  Some restoration to edges and letter “G” but very good colour match.

 

15 * GWR DROP-CASE CLOCK with 12” dial and “GWR” in roundel on face.  Bottom of case has the ivorine label “GWR 781” and is said to be from Oxford station.  Overall dimensions are 28½” tall x 6½” deep and 16” wide.  Superb ex-station condition and appears to be in full working order.

 

16 * ISLE OF WIGHT RAILWAY REFRESHMENT DEPARTMENT pair of silverplate FISH SERVERS manufactured by Elkington.  11¼” and 9¼” long with company initial within garter design stamped in the top of the handle.  VGC.

 

17 * METROPOLITAN-VICKERS DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE comprised of 12” x 5½” steel description plate detailing Weight, Tractive Effort, Manufacturer, etc and 5” x 1¾” chrome plate showing “Serial Number 1009.”  Carried by the Co-Bo 1,200HP diesel-electric Type 2 loco numbered D5716 when taken into stock at Derby in May 1959.  By February 1961 the loco was stored at Derby and returned to MV for repairs in October that year.  In October 1964 it went to Crewe for re-engineering and returned to traffic in March 1966.  Withdrawal finally came in September and it went into store at Kingmoor whence it was towed to John Cashmore at Great Bridge for scrapping a year later, being cut up by the December.  Locos were to become class 28, but none survived long enough to be renumbered, but D5705 is preserved.  Ex-loco condition.  (2)

18 * TOTEM: NEWTOWN BR (W) chocolate and cream half-flanged with deep colour and shine. Some old repainting to minor edge rusting and edge chip, VGC otherwise.  An ex-Cambrian Railways station between Welshpool and Caersws opened in 1861.  A scarce totem not often seen at auction.

 

19 * GWR CARRIAGE PRINT with sepia photographic views of “Kingswear” and “Fort Catherine, Tenby” in an original glazed wooden frame in VGC.  Rare. 

 

20 * SR TARGET STATION SIGN: TOTTON in excellent condition with good colour and shine, mounted on original board.  An ex-LSWR station west of Southampton opened in 1859 originally named Eling Junction, soon after renamed Totton & Eling.  A target rarely seen at auction.

 

21 * CARRIAGE PRINT: “Western Highlands Near Morar” by Jack Merriott from the ScR series (1956).  A scarce larger size (LMR style) print of the mountain scenery by Loch Morar close to the Fort William – Mallaig line.  In original type glazed wooden frame and in good condition.

 

22 * SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: “Hethersett.”  69½” x 12” wooden with raised metal letters in good ex-box condition.  An ex-GER location near Wymondham on the Ely – Norwich line.  The signalbox closed in June 1987.

 

23 * TAFF VALE RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP stamped on side “TVR Pattern” with skirt.  Copper lens cone with wide rim around bevel-edged glass.  Complete with all glasses, reservoir stamped “TVR,” burner and reflector.  This lamp would have been retained by the TVR in their works as a “Works Pattern” and therefore has no allocation numbers.  Restored.

 

24 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: “31824” as carried by ex-SE&CR 2-6-0 “N” class loco No. 824 designed by R.E.L. Maunsell and built at Ashford in August 1923.  Became SR 1824 and BR 31824 at Nationalisation.  For a long time a Bricklayers Arms engine, transferred to Stewarts Lane in June 1960, and finally Redhill in July 1963 from where withdrawn in September the same year.  Restored front and back a long time ago.  BR (S) and letter “A” (Ashford) clearly visible on the back.

 

25 * SHEDPLATE: 24E BLACKPOOL CENTRAL (Until June 1950, also from April 1952 – September 1963, changed to 28A between June 1950 – September 1952, finally became 10D after September 1963).  Repainted front, ex-loco back.

 

26 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Andrew Barclay Sons & Co Limited Caledonia Works Kilmarnock No. 351 1941” as carried by the 80HP 0-4-0 diesel mechanical loco new to ROF Drigg in March 1941 as “Drigg No. 2.”  In 1956 it went to ROF Ranskill, Notts, then in June 1959 to F. Watkins (Boilers) Ltd., Sling Plant Depot, Gloucestershire, and finally in March 1962 to Horseley Bridge & Thomas Piggott Ltd., Great Bridge, Staffs.  Scrapped c. February 1969 by Cashmores of Great Bridge.  Oval, 16¾” x 11¾” in ex-loco condition.

 

27 * TOTEM: CHEADLE HULME BR (M) fully flanged maroon in good ex-station condition with fine colour but suffers from some edge rusting and slight staining to the outer white lining.  An ex-LNWR station on the Crewe – Manchester line, the junction for Macclesfield.   A rare totem not seen at auction since 1989.

 

28 * ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “British Railways Built by the English Electric Co. Ltd. Vulcan Works 1965 No. 3470/E316.  Electrical Equipment by Associated Electrical Industries & The English Electric Co. Ltd.,” as carried by the BR Bo-Bo 4,040HP 25kV ac overhead electric loco No. E3178 class AL6 when taken into stock at Crewe in August 1965.  Renumbered 86244 under the TOPS scheme in March 1974 and reclassified class 86/2.  Named “THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION” at Euston in November 1981.  Transferred to Longsight in July 1991 and taken off lease in November 2002 and into secure storage at MOD Longtown.  Loco sent to Immingham TMD in August 2003, nameplates removed in October and cut up by staff from Easco in November 2003.  8¾” x 6¾”, the number “86244” is clearly stamped on the back.  Totally ex-loco condition.

 

29 * STEEL SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “Braithwaite – Bassenthwaite Lake” from the ex-CK&PR line from Penrith – Cockermouth.  Braithwaite was a small 4-lever from box opened in 1874, both were closed in April 1966. Ex section condition, with minor rusting only.

 

30 * GWR CAST-IRON CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “5322” as carried by the “43XX” class 2-6-0 tender loco built at Swindon in August 1917, Works No. 2694 Lot 206.   Latterly a Pontypool Road engine, time was spent at Didcot, Reading and Tyseley.  Withdrawn April 1964 and moved to D. Woodham, Barry Docks for scrap in October the same year.  The loco was subsequently saved for preservation and was the 3rd so to leave.  It was restored at Caerphilly and is now at Didcot. Restored front some time ago, back ex-loco, and in good condition apart from a hardly noticeable hairline crack at centre.

 

31 * BR (NE) small sized totem shaped POSTER BOARD HEADING “British Railways” in white lettering on tangerine, 20½” x 6”.  A little chipping around screwholes, otherwise good with deep colour and shine.

 

32 * BRASS 9” x 5” LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “London & North Eastern Railway 5471 Rebuilt Stratford Works 1921” from the GER “Y14” class 0-6-0 loco originally numbered 543 when built at Stratford in June 1913 to Order G73.  Became LNER 7543 in October 1925 class “J15” and 5471 in September 1946  Renumbered 65471 by BR in November 1949 the loco spent many years at Norwich from where withdrawal took place in June 1960 and was broken up at Stratford.  Face polished only.

 

33 * LNER CAST-IRON SEATBACK: LARGO.  22” x 4¼” with rounded ends.  Front restored in black on white some time ago.  An ex-NBR station on the coast line from Leuchars Junction – Thornton Junction opened in 1852, closed in September 1965.

 

34 * SR ENAMEL POSTER BOARD HEADING: “Southern” in white serif-style lettering on black background.  25” x 4” deep colour and shine, chip repairs to edge rusting and one chip only.

 

35   BR (S) ENAMEL SIGN: “Queue Other Side For Taxis” in white lettering on green.  30” x 12” with minor edge rusting, VGC overall with deep colour and shine.

 

36 * WEST RIDING & GRIMSBY RAILWAY cast-iron BRIDGEPLATE: “53.”  Oval, 17¾” x 13¼”.  Unrestored.  Unusual to find an oval-shaped  WR&GR bridgeplate.

 

37 * CARRIAGE PRINT: “Durham Cathedral” by Edwin Byatt from the LNER pre-war series (1937-39).  A scarce print and view of the cathedral with river, cottages and trees in the foreground.  Original type glazed wooden frame in VGC.

 

38 * TOTEM: HAYES & HARLINGTON BR (W) black and white fully flanged in excellent condition with repaired minor edge chips and rusting only.  An ex-GWR station on the Paddington – Reading main line opened in November 1897.  A difficult to find example, one of only a handful of stations to sport the black and white totem.

 

39 * BR(S) BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE as carried by “Merchant Navy” class 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive No. 35022 “HOLLAND AMERICA LINE.”  The legend “BR (S) T/A” and the number “35022” clearly stamped into cast mounting bracket.  Built at Eastleigh in October 1948 to order HO 3393 and rebuilt there in June 1956, the loco spent many years at Bournemouth before moving to Exmouth Junction, with a brief spell at Nine Elms and finally to Weymouth. Withdrawn in May 1966 and sent to D. Woodham at Barry Docks for scrapping in October the same year.  Subsequently purchased privately for preservation and moved to Swanage for restoration in March 1986, the 170th loco to leave Barry.  The whistle is complete with all the linkage and valve and is mounted on a wooden base.  18” tall from lever to top of finial.  A superb item in VGC.

 

40 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “The Toowoomba Foundry Ltd. A.D. 1912 Southern Cross Works No. 3” as carried by Queensland Government Railways 4-6-0 No. 590. Oval, 11¾” x 9¼” slightly warped and with an extra hole drilled, but ex-loco condition.  A rare builder who only built 45 locos.

 

41 * SHEDPLATE: 41H STAVELEY (GC) (July 1958 – June 1965, previously 38D).  A rare example in ex-loco condition.

 

42 * CARRIAGE PRINT: “Culzean Castle, Near Maybole, Ayrshire” by Kenneth Steel from the ScR series (1956-57).  View of castle with coastline and hills beyond.  In original type glazed wooden frame and VGC.

 

43 * GER SILVERPLATE CANDLE HOLDER.  6” diameter x 3” high with ornate carrying handle.  Dragon’s wing design and initials in script style stamped in saucer.  No manufacturer named.  VGC.

 

44   SINGLE LINE BRASS AND STEEL TRAIN STAFF for the section Chacewater – St Agnes which is engraved on brass pates attached to the end.  22¼” long.  The first section on the ex-GWR Chacewater – Newquay branch in Cornwall which closed in October 1964.  Restored and highly polished.

 

45 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. 7491 Beyer-Garratt Locomotive British Patent Nos. 647476, 647480, 647519-582396 Australian Patent 140217-127087, Manchester 1952” as carried by New South Wales Government Railways class AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4 No. 6019 introduced into service June 1953 and withdrawn October 1970.  Oval.  Restored front only.

 

46 * CENTRAL LONDON RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP with brass plate on body “C.L.R. 170”  with copper top, no skirt but solid base, lens cowl and rear handle.  GWR style door clip.    Complete with all glasses, unmarked reservoir, burner and reflector.  Original unrestored condition.

 

47 * CAST-IRON TENDERPLATE: “GWR 2081 Swindon.”   The tender was built at Swindon c. November 1919 to lot A99 to a standard Churchward design.  It was built to carry 3,500 gallons of water and 7 tons of coal.  Oval 8½” x 6” front restored, back ex-loco condition.  From the tender of a 43XX class 2-6-0 loco.

 

48 * TOTEM: LONGNIDDRY BR (Sc) half-flanged light blue with good colour.  A couple of repaired edge chips only.  An ex-NBR station on the ECML between Edinburgh – Dunbar opened June 1846.  A scarce totem appearing only twice before at auction.

 

49 * KENYA & UGANDA RAILWAYS & HARBOURS COAT OF ARMS in gold leaf mounted on a varnished wooden board 19” x 22”.  The transfer used was dated 3.10.1929.  VGC.

 

50 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “ILLUSTRIOUS” from the LMS 4-6-0 “Patriot” class loco built at Crewe Works No. 104 in April 1933 and originally numbered 6011.  Renumbered 5532 in 1934 and became 45532 at Nationalisation.  Latterly shedded at Camden, then Derby and Saltley before withdrawal from Carlisle Upperby (12B) in February 1964.  34½” x 4¼”, the front restored a long time ago, the back virtually ex-loco.  Surely amongst the best of all “Patriot” names.

71 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Yorkshire Engine Co. Limited No. 288 Meadow-Hall Works 1876 Sheffield” as carried by the outside cylinder 0-4-0ST at Chas Cammell & Co Ltd., Grimesthorpe & Cyclops Works, Sheffield, named “Dronfield.”  In 1929 the firm became part of English Steel Corporation.  The loco was sold to Midland Iron Co., Rotherham and de-named, date unknown.  Scrapped in March 1951.  Oval, 12¾” x 7½” lightly face polished only.  A rare and early plate.

 

72 * FIBRE SINGLE LINE TABLET: “Linton – Shelford 24” from the ex-GER line to Cambridge from Marks Tey which closed in March 1967.  VGC.

 

73 * TOTEM: BACKWORTH BR (NE) tangerine fully flanged with good colour and shine and one face chip only.  Bent slightly at centre, but enamel unaffected, some edge rusting and edge chip repairs.  An ex-NER station originally named Hotspur when opened in June 1864, renamed a year later, closed June 1977.  A scarce totem, rarely seen at auction.

 

74 * CAST-IRON BI-LINGUAL GWR TRESPASS NOTICE: “Notice … (plus three lines of text (in English)) – Rhybudd … (plus four lines of text (in Welsh)).  27” x 18” unrestored.

 

75 * HULL & BARNSLEY RAILWAY STATION LAMP: “Willerby & Kirkella.”  Approx 24” high and 15” square at the widest point with front lamp glass showing the station name in place.  One of the side glasses is loose.  No burner.  Totally unrestored ex-station condition.  From a location just to the west of Hull on the line to Barnsley, closed in 1955.

 

76 * MOZAMBIQUE RAILWAY BRASS LOCOMOTIVE CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “Caminhos de Ferro Moçambique 58” as carried by 0-8-2T built Henschel 28386/50. The plate has a bullet hole just below the number 5 which does not detract.  Oval, 20½” x 14¼”, front restored.

 

77 * LNER ENAMEL SHED ALLOCATION PLATE: “Annesley.”  Black lettering on white.  10” 1½” with curved ends.  Good condition.

 

78 * LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “The English Electric Co. Ltd. Vulcan Works Newton-le-Willows, England No. 3536/D965 1965” as carried by the BR Co-Co 1,750HP Type 3 diesel electric loco numbered D6976 when new to Cardiff in April 1965.  Renumbered 37276 in March 1974 class 37/0 and then to 37413 when ETH-fitted in September 1985.  Named “Loch Eil Outward Bound” without ceremony at Eastfield TMD in March 1987.  Substantial damage received in a collision with 37403 at Ardlui in March 1992 and sent to Motherwell for repairs,  Nameplates removed and renamed “The Scottish Railway Preservation Society” at Bo’ness in September 1997.  Loco went to store at Doncaster in December 2000.  Nameplates removed c. March 2001 and transferred to 37411.  37413 moved to Cardiff for repairs and returned to traffic when completed, date unknown.  The number “37276” stamped into the back.  Chromed brass, 10¼” x 4¾” unrestored, but one corner has been repaired.

 

79 * SHEDPLATE: 53B HULL (BOTANIC GARDENS) (1950 – June 1959, then changed to 50C).  Good, ex-loco condition.

 

80 * BRASS INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “Minerva” as carried by the 0-6-0T inside cylinder loco built by Hudswell Clarke No. 1241 and ex-works in May 1917.  New to John Summers & Son., Shotton (Hawarden Bridge) Steelworks where it remained until scrapped c.1959.  29¾” x 6½” in ex-loco condition with additional holes drilled in service to facilitate modified fitting.

 

81 * CARRIAGE PRINT: “Ditton Viaduct, Lancashire” by Claude Buckle from the LMR “Railway Architecture” series (1952).  A fine view of the viaduct with canal boats and coal wagons standing at the wharf.  Slight fading at the base, OK otherwise.  In an original type glazed wooden frame.

 

82 * TOTEM: CHELTENHAM SPA MALVERN ROAD BR (W) half-flanged chocolate and cream with good colour and shine.  Basically ex-station condition with some edge rusting and splashes of paint, but no chips evident.  An ex-GWR station opened in 1908, closed January 1966.

 

83 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Fried. Krupp A.G. Lokomotivfabrik Essen Germany Nr. 1854, 1939” as carried by South African Railways 4-8-2 No.2667 of class 19D. Rectangular 13” x 7¼” unrestored.

 

84 * SHEDPLATE: 9A LONGSIGHT (in LMS style) (depot closed to steam February 1965) still in use.  Restored front and back some time ago.

 

85 * ENAMEL STREET SIGN: “Borough of Acton Old Oak Common Lane NW10.”  From a road very familiar to the thousands of trainspotters that must have walked along it making the pilgrimage to the famous depot at Old Oak Common (81A).  39” x 18” the black lettering a little faded but the red lettering OK, a little edge rusting, but good overall.  Not exactly railwayana, more of nostalgic interest!

 

86 * GCR DINING CARS SILVERPLATE 6-SLICE TOAST RACK manufactured by Walker & Hall.  6” high x 6” long with carrying handle on top.  Company name and coat of arms stamped atop the base. Good condition.

 

87 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS Built 1892 Derby.”  Usual embossed lettering with the date engraved and picked out in white.  Locos built in that year were MR 2183 class 4-4-0s LMS Nos. 403-422, MR 1853 class 4-2-2s LMS Nos. 630-649, MR 1823 class 0-4-4Ts LMS Nos. 1341-1370 and MR 1102 class 0-6-0Ts LMS Nos. 1825-1844.  Oval 10½” x6”.  Small section of rim missing at base and holes slightly extended, VGC otherwise.

 

88 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: “61115” from the ex-LNER “B1” class 4-6-0 loco numbered 1115 when built by NBL Queens Park Works No. 25871  Entered service in January 1947 and renumbered BR 61115 in October 1948.  Shedded at York, Copley Hill, Low Moor, Mirfield until withdrawn in May 1967 from Wakefield and cut up by Arnott Young Ltd. of Parkgate.   Front restored only.  Other loco classes with the same casting type are listed on the back.

 

89 * CARRIAGE PRINT: “Kingston Market, Surrey” by Donald Maxwell from the Southern Railway original series (1936).  Extremely rare, never seen at auction previously.  A study by the book illustrator of the Surrey market place located on the loop line from New Malden – Twickenham.  In original type glazed wooden frame and titled mount.  VGC with minor marks on mounts.

 

90 * TOTEM: LEVERTON BR (E) fully flanged dark blue with deep colour and shine in excellent condition with a little repainting of edge rusting and an expert chip repair at one end.  An ex-GCR station on the Retford – Lincoln line opened in 1850, closed in November 1959.  A rare totem, never seen in auction previously.

 

91 * GREAT NORTHERN & GREAT EASTERN JOINT RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP with brass plate on reducing cone stamped “GNR” but overplated with brass plate “GN & GE No. 11 Blankney” and a second (steel) plate “Petroleum.”  The base is stamped “GNR” with brass plate “Great Northern Railway Company Blankney No 2.”  Copper lens cone and brass rimmed bevel-edged glass.  Complete with all glasses, unmarked reservoir, burner and reflector.  Blankney & Metheringham (between Lincoln – Sleaford) opened in August 1882, closed September 1961, but reopened as Metheringham in October 1975.  Original unrestored condition.

 

92 * ALUMINIUM SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “Corwen West – Llandrillo” from the ex-GWR line from Bala Junction closed in December 1964.  Traces of black paint.

 

93 * CAST-IRON BRIDGE NOTICE: “Leeds and Liverpool Canal Motor Car Acts 1896 and 1903 – Notice … (plus eleven lines of text).”  25” x 20” unrestored.

 

94 * BRISTOL & EXETER RAILWAY.  A superb and rare BRASS TIPSTAFF topped by a brass crown and clearly engraved “BERy.”  Wooden handle 8” long, the shorter version.  The Bristol & Exeter Railway was absorbed by the GWR on 1st January 1876.  A very special item in VGC.

 

95 * SR TARGET ENAMEL: BARNSTAPLE JUNCTION (with “Junction” in the bottom semi-circle) in reasonable condition with good colour, but one or two major chips and the usual edge rusting in need of restoration.  Nevertheless, a scarce target from a desirable West Country location.  An ex-LSWR station opened 1st August 1854 now at the end of the line from Exeter, the various radiating branches having long-since gone.

 

96 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Beyer Peacock & Co. Ltd. Gorton Foundry Manchester 1899.”  From photographs it appears that the only locos built in 1899 with the large plates were SL&NCR 5’ 3” gauge 0-6-4T “Lissadell” and “Hazelwood” (BP Nos. 4073 and 4074 respectively).  Oval16½” x 8” face restored only.

 

97   LNWR Fletcher’s double-line BLOCK INSTRUMENT 24½” tall bearing ivorine plates “2nd Down Passr Block Syston North Jct” and “Up Goods Block Syston North Jctn.”  The instrument is from Syston South Junction box, a 57-lever ex-MR installation opened in November 1911 and closed April 1987.  Good condition.

 

98 * TOTEM: APPLEBY WEST BR (LMR) half-flanged maroon basically in ex-station condition with minor edge rusting and the colour is a little matt, but not faded.  Probably one of the best examples to be found.  An ex-MR station opened in 1876 as Appleby, renamed Appleby West in September 1952, before reverting to the original name in 1968.  A rare totem from the Settle & Carlisle line seen only twice before at auction.

 

99 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “North British Locomotive Company Glasgow No. 26150 1947” as carried by LNER 4-6-0 B1 class loco No. 1249.  Entered service in October 1947 and named “FITZHERBERT WRIGHT” in December the same year.  Became BR 61249 in June 1950 and was withdrawn in June 1964, having spent many years at Stratford, then Parkeston for a short time, Darnall and finally Canklow.  Cut up by George Cohen at Ickles.  Diamond shaped, 14¼” x 6¾ in ex-loco condition.

 

100 *   LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “HARLECH CASTLE” from the GWR 4-6-0 “Castle” class loco No. 4095 built at Swindon in June 1926 to Lot No. 234.  Allocated to Landore, Laira, Penzance, Laira again, the loco ended its days at Reading (81D) where withdrawal took place in December 1962 and was scrapped by A. King & Sons of Norwich.  The Castle is situated in the town, above the station on the Barmouth – Pwllheli section of the Cambrian Coast Line.  Fully beaded, lightly polished, VGC.

101 *   BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “North British Locomotive Coy. Ltd. Glasgow 1903 No. 16173 Hyde Park Works” as carried by the Rhodesia Railways 3’ 6” gauge 4-8-0 7th class loco No. 43.  It was last used by RR in December 1954. In September 1964 it passed to the Gwelo Light Railway Society and in 1972 to the National Railways of Zimbabwe Museum at Bulawayo for preservation.   Circular, 7¾” diameter, unrestored.

 

102 *   SR Sykes standard three-position BLOCK INSTRUMENT the wooden cased dial enamel labelled “Down Line” and “Ashford” the steel cased top mounted dial enamel labelled “Up Line.”  Appears to be in full working order following removal from Staines signalbox which was opened by the SR in June 1930 and closed in September 1974.  VGC.

 

103 *   EASTERN & MIDLAND RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP.  The precursor of the GER sliding knob type with brass plate on reducing cone “J. Cowdy London.”  The body carries two brass plates stamped “E&MR 243 E&MR” and “Gayton Road.”  Brass rimmed bevel-edged glass.  Complete with all glasses (green cracked), unmarked reservoir, burner and reflector.  No back handle.  Gayton Road (between South Lynn and Fakenham) opened in July 1877, closed March 1959. The E&MR was formed by amalgamation of the Lynn & Fakenham and two other railways in 1882 and was later acquired by the Midland and GNR companies in 1893 to become the M&GN Railways Joint Committee.  Original unrestored condition.  A very rare handlamp.

 

104 LNER BRASS B1 CLASS ELECTRIC SIDE/TAIL LAMP.  Square design with rotating red coloured lens, 4½” x 6” x 5” deep, with the number EL89-1 visible on rear.  VGC.

106 *   SOMERSET & DORSET JOINT RAILWAY COAT OF ARMS in gold leaf on black painted wooden board.  13” x 15” in VGC.

 

107 *   GWR HOTELS SILVERPLATE MUFFIN DISH manufactured by Mappin & Webb.  Three-part design with base, insert and lid which has an ornate knob on the top.  8” diameter x 5” high, stamped with the GWR Hotels coat of arms on the base and lid.  Good condition.  Unusual.

 

108 *   TOTEM: TONYPANDY & TREALAW BR (W) fully flanged chocolate and cream with good colour but very faintly pitted.  One or two well-executed repairs to large chips (two affecting text).  An ex-TVR station on the Treherbert branch which opened as Trealaw in 1908 renamed a year later.  A scarce totem not seen at auction since 1998.

 

109 BRASS 9” x 5” LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “London & North Eastern Railway 8150 Rebuilt Stratford Works 1929.”  As carried by ex-GER “F48” class 0-6-0 loco No. 1150 built at Stratford in September 1900 to order F48.  Became LNER 8150 class “J16” in 1924 and superheater fitted in May 1929, later renumbered 5500 in June 1946 and finally 65500 by BR in March 1951.  Withdrawn in March 1958 from Cambridge.  The loco was the first of the class.  Ex-loco condition.

 

110 *   NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY ENAMEL DOOR PLATE: “General Room & Booking Office” on two lines.  Cream lettering on brown background.  Chip around top centre screwhole, otherwise good.  20½” x 5½”.
