1061        A description of Mr Macneill’s method of laying down railway sections and plans in juxtaposition as adopted by the Standing Order Committee of the House of Commons 1837. Published John Weale. Complete with three folding plates. An early “standard” for submissions of plans and sections to Parliament to support railway bills. Some surface dirt, minor spotting and lacks back cover (a later brown paper addition) but is complete and free from tears. (£30-£50)

1062        Southern Railway Musical Society Concert at Caxton Hall 24 March 1938. Programme book (8in x 10in) with no less than 92pp. Of these, details of the concert and spread over 12 green pages in the centre. The rest contain advertisements (with an index). With a full orchestra and choir the series of annual concerts were clearly of a high standard to attract nationally known artists - on this occasion they included Arthur Askey whose autograph appears on the programme. Wheel arrangements featured include 2-10-0, 0-6-6-0, 2-6-6-2; 2-8-2 as well as the 0-10-0 and 2-6-2T TOGETHER WITH five similar drawings of locos that were built (these to scale of 0.25in : 1ft). 1106        Great Central Railway: a pair of original colour tinted photographs by Photochrom Ltd in original mount (19in x 9.5in). Shakespeare's Birthplace (Stratford-on-Avon,via Woodford) and Clumber House, The Dukeries (Worksop Station, Great Central Railway). An interesting original handwritten note appears on the back: "Two Lunch or Dine adverts in one compartment only is quite in order" The mount is torn in one place and there is edge fading. There are some marks on the "sky" of Clumber House which could almost certainly be removed by careful restoration. Pre-group carriage prints in original mounts are rare and this is the first GCR we have seen. (£80-£100)

1107        North London Railway: this is smaller than normal (22in x 5.5in) printed on thick card with three "messages": Caution about opening doors prematurely; Smoking in Carriages and "Notice, Passengers are particularly requested not to put their feet on the cushion and seats of carriages". A little foxing on pages. Contains the 24 coloured acquatint plates for which this early work is particularly noted. Only the frontis plate is slightly affected by foxing in this copy. A scarce book. 1202        G W R: Running Powers, May 1927 Edition. Copy No 50 of the post grouping book in the usual red leather ledger - type binding with gilt tilting. Some rubbing and marks of normal use on boards but contents tight and virtually mint. A nice copy. (£200-£300)

1203        N E R: Distance Tables 1892. This is a modern rebinding in superb black full calf with gilt titling and marbled end papers in maroon slip case. There is some staining on the early pages and the index and Northern Division title page are torn for about 2in in the middle close to the spine (no loss). A few pages have minor edge nicks - obtained during use in original binding. A number of amendments have been made with new sheets being tipped in. There are many distance diagrams as well as tables. A very good reference copy. (N.B. page numbering is not in sequence and not all page numbers are used). (£200-£300)

1204        L & Y / L M S: 40 Private Siding Diagrams in book cloth covered cardboard folder with gilt titling. Overall folder measures 26.5in x 11.5in but size of individual diagrams varies. All are believed to be on the former L & Y system and many are so titled. Some were originated during L M S days and there are a few re-issues recording changes at particular locations. Condition varies but the majority are sound and not torn or creased. (£70-£80)

1205        A Popular Description of The Steam Engine designed to convey a clear idea of the principle and action of that wonderful machine. Published by James Reynolds, 174 Strand in 1848 including two large dmf coloured diagrams on canvas, each 34in x 22in: one of a double action beam condensing steam engine and the second of a “locomotive engine”. Some spotting but basically vgc. In contemporary cloth board binder with gilt titling - repaired on spine. The coloured diagrams are most attractive. (£50-£70)

1206        WHISHAW: THE RAILWAYS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND. 1840 1st Edition complete with appendix and all plates. Has been recased preserving the original cloth boards with Euston Arch crest on front. Corners are bumped and there are marks of normal careful use which one would expect after 160 years. The pages are remarkably clean and free from spotting; One folding plate has a 2in tear (no loss). Some minor curling of page corners at beginning and end of book. A chance to acquire one of the railway classics - the first general survey of UK railways. (£250-£350)


1207        COLBURN ZERAH: LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING AND THE MECHANISM OF RAILWAYS. 1871 Volume 1: Text. 320pp with many woodcuts and Volume 2: Plates with 64 engraved plates. Original publisher’s brown cloth boards. Vol 1 covers are well rubbed and front board is holding - just. Although a little ragged, original spine cloth is virtually intact. Vol 2 covers are in generally good condition. Normal marks of use with rubbing on corners and lower edges. Spine cloth faded with usual nicks top and bottom. The contents of both volumes are tight and vgc with only a small amount of foxing on the plates. Colburn took his own life when the text was only half complete and the work was completed by D.K. Clark. (£150-£200)

1208        BREES S C: APPENDIX TO RAILWAY PRACTICE: A copious abstract of the whole of the evidence given upon the London & Birmingham and Great Western Railway Bills .... to which is added A Glossary of Technical Terms used in civil engineering ... and the details of Hawthorne’s celebrated locomotive engine for the Paris and Versailles Railway. London 1839. 373pp plus 6 plates. Recently re-cased in half calf with panelled spine. Contents have some fading around edges of pages and some fading/foxing on plates but o/w a very good copy. (£120-£150)

1209        CENTRAL LONDON RAILWAY: (1911) CORONATION SOUVENIR. A 36 page book 7in x 11in specially published by the CLR for sale at 1s/6d. The title page states “Some London Views” - in fact there are 15 beautifully coloured views with a full page description for each on the facing page. (All text is printed in gilt). Additionally there are coloured portraits of their majesties (also reproduced on the front cover) and of the coronation state coach. The covers are thick green card with a gilt spine cloth and stamped gilt titling. Surrounding the portraits on the cover is a raised marquetry frame which gives the impression of a miniature “picture”. A delightful and unusual item with a map of the CLR. The contents are in excellent condition and the covers have a few marks of normal use with a little rubbing on corners and edges. (£100-£150)

1210        Lincoln Railway Committee Minute Book May to Sept 1844. This was a committee formed by the inhabitants of Lincoln to watch over the town’s interests in the plethora of railway promotion. In the six months they noted nine proposed railways with which they needed to be concerned because they were - or were not - proposing to come to Lincoln. 23 pages of formal minutes and a further eleven pages (other end of book) recording brief details of presentations given by three rival companies. Most of the book is blank. Foolscap, thick board covers, spine paper peeling but contents tight and gc/vgc. (£40-£50)

1211        Wood N: A Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads and Interior Communication in General. 3rd Edition 1838. A very thorough work on the technology of the expanding railway scene - the standard book of the period on this subject. xxvii + 760pp + 14 folding plates, drawing and tables. This was Col H C B Rogers’ copy. An early recasing, this book has green cloth boards with blind stamped pattern and gilt titling on spine. Well rubbed on corners and nicks on (faded) spine cloth. Contents tight and generally gc. Some minor sporadic foxing on text pages; moderate foxing on plates. (£100-£150)
