Bags and large coats are not allowed in the viewing areas. Many of the items can only be viewed under steward supervision. Other security surveillance will be in place.

LOT  DESCRIPTION

 

1  *  SOUTHERN RAILWAY double-sided ENAMEL STATION DIRECTION SIGN: “Railway Station Through Queen Street” with pointing arrow.  From the street leading to Exeter Queen Street station opened by the LSWR in July 1860, renamed Exeter Central by the SR on 1st July 1933.  Green and white enamel, 20” x 15¼” complete with original hanging bracket.  A little face and edge chipping but a rare example nonetheless.

 

2  *  BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “W.G. Bagnall Ltd. Engineers, Stafford, England No. 2665” as carried by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Huntingdon Electric Co., Little Barford Power Station, St Neots, 0-4-0ST outside cylinder Loco ex works December 1942 named “GENERAL WADE HAYES.”  By March 1943 the loco had been transferred to Stourport Power Station, where it remained, ownership changing only through Nationalisation and reorganisation.  The loco was scrapped in February 1968.  Oval, 8” x 5¼”, unrestored.

 

3  *  SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 73126 as carried by the BR Standard class 5MT 4-6-0 locomotive built at Derby in July 1956.  Delivered new to Shrewsbury, where it stayed until September 1958, when transferred to Patricroft until withdrawal in April 1968, and cut up by A. Draper at Hull.  Front restored some time ago, ex-loco back.

 

4  *  MIDLAND & SOUTH WESTERN JUNCTION RAILWAY MR small pattern three-aspect HANDLAMP stamped “80” and brass plated “A. Teal” on the reducing cone.  The legend “M&SWJR” and “139” are picked out in cream paint on the body side.  The reservoir is also marked “M&SWJR” and is complete with burner and reflector.

 

5  *  TOTEM: WIDNEY MANOR.  BR (W) fully-flanged chocolate and cream in good condition overall with good colour but shine a little flat.  An ex-GWR West Midlands station between Solihull and Knowle & Dorridge opened July 1899.

 

6  *  GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY CAST-IRON NOTICE: “The Owners and Drivers of Locomotives and Other Ponderous Vehicles …. (plus eight lines of text).”  Kings Cross, dated 1883.  26½” x 17¾” totally unrestored.  Unusual wording.

 

7  *  BRASS-FACED SINGLE-LINE TABLET: “Linton – Haverhill 18” (the latter re-engraved when the section was lengthened).  From the ex-GER line from Shelford – Long Melford which closed in March 1967.  Good, ex-section condition.

 

8  *  SHEDPLATE: 88A CARDIFF (CATHAYS) (1950 – December 1957) RADYR (CARDIFF) (December 1957 – January 1961, later 88B) CANTON (CARDIFF) (from 86C, January 1961 – September 1962, later 86A).  The loco number “92233” has been chalked on the back. A BR Standard Cl 9F 2-10-0 built at Crewe to Order E497 new to Pontypool Road in August 1958.  Allocated to a number of South Wales depots in 1958-64, the loco spent nearly two years at 88A (Jan 1961-Dec 1962) before migrating north to Carlisle Kingmoor and finally Speke Junction where withdrawn in February 1968.  Together with a cast-iron “SC” (Self Cleaning) plate.  Both items in ex-loco condition.  (2)

 

9  *  LNER CAST-IRON SEATBACK: FANGFOSS.  27” x 4¼” with rounded ends.  Good, unrestored condition with faint traces of green paint.  An ex-NER station on the York – Market Weighton line opened in October 1847, closed January 1959.

 

10 * TOTEM: LEICESTER CENTRAL.  BR (M) fully-flanged maroon.  Minor edge rusting, otherwise very good condition with deep colour and shine.  An ex-GCR station opened 15th March 1899 on completion of the “London Extension” but sadly closed on 5th May 1969.  A highly desirable but scarce totem, seldom seen at auction.

 

11 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS Rebuilt Derby.”  Believed to be from ex-MR Johnson designed 4-4-0 class 60 loco numbered 2591 when built by Neilson Reid in 1901 works No. 5781.  Rebuilt with new frames and cylinders at Derby in 1914.  Became LMS 553 class 2P and BR 40553 in June 1948.  Allocated to and withdrawn from Nottingham in December 1958.  The number “40553” is chalked on the back.  Oval 10¼” x 6”, face restored only some time ago.

 

12 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 80028 as carried by the BR Standard class 4MT 2-6-4T loco built at Brighton to order No. BR 3621 delivered to Kittybrewster January 1952 and stayed there until June 1961 when transferred to Ardrossan, Hurlford, Stranraer and finally Perth in 1964.  Withdrawn from Perth in September 1966 and cut up by G.H. Campbell, Airdrie in December that year.  Repainted front and back.

 

13 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “Mashonaland Railway Co. Ld. 38,” as carried by class 7 4-8-0 loco built by North British Loco Co. works number 16092 of 1903 to work on the Kalomo – Broken Hill section of the 3 ft 6 in gauge Mashonaland Railway in Northern Rhodesia.  Withdrawn in 1938 and sold to the Zambesi Sawmills on their railway system in Zambia.  Taken out of service in 1954 for major overhaul and never used again.  Oval, 19” x 13¾”, face lightly polished only.

 

14 * BR (M) ENAMEL SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: VICTORIA SOUTH.  Maroon with white lettering, fully-flanged.  96” x 12” colour a little flat and a few repaired edge chips, good otherwise.  From the signalbox to the south end of Nottingham Victoria station, opened in May 1900, closed September 1967. Victoria South was a GCR Non-Standard design fitted with a Railway Signal Company Tappet frame.

 

15 * TOTEM: HERNE BAY.  BR (S) fully-flanged green.  Edge rusting and chips, good colour and shine otherwise.  An ex-SE&CR station on the Kent Coast between Whitstable and Margate opened in July 1861 as Herne Bay and Hampton-on-Sea, renamed in 1951.

 

16 * ENAMEL STREET DIRECTION SIGN: “British Railways (in totem) Station” with left pointing arrow.  BR (M) maroon with white lettering.  21” x 10½”, one small edge chip, colour a little flat but OK.

 

17 * GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY (stamped on base) wood-cased, single-needle, non-pegging BLOCK INSTRUMENT which has been converted from a peg-and-chain mechanism, the wooden handle from which is retained.  With original outside terminals and has the large GNR engraved brass location plate “To St James Deeping.”  It is also stamped “1105” on front edge of base.  VGC.  Much less-common than the NER examples.  From Littleworth signal box, on the Werrington Junction – Spalding line, a GNR Type 1 design opened in 1875 fitted with a 30-lever McKenzie & Holland 1873 patent frame.

 

18 * CARRIAGE PRINT: HARROGATE, YORKSHIRE by Jack Merriott from the LNER post-war series (1948-1955).  A view of the park and pathway leading down to the old spa town.  In an original type glazed wooden frame in VGC.

 

19 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “The Vulcan Foundry (Limited), Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire No. 4767, 1936” as carried by LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 loco numbered 8090 when built.  Renumbered 48090 at Nationalisation.  Allocated to Northampton until January 1963, then at Mold Junction, Chester, Buxton.  Withdrawn April 1968 from Bolton and cut up by John Cashmore, Great Bridge in July 1968. Oval, 9” x 5¼” face lightly polished only.

 

20 * TOTEM: CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH CENTRAL.  BR (M) fully-flanged maroon with “Central” appearing in the lower panel.  A couple of minor surface scratches, but overall very good condition with deep colour and shine.  An ex-MR Derbyshire station between Chinley and Peak Forest opened in February 1867, closed March 1967.  Seen only once before at auction, this totem is keenly sought after.

 

21 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE from the 60 cm gauge 0-10-0T built by Berliner Maschinenbau AG (Vorm L. Schartzkopff) Berlin Germany in 1928 works No. 9316 for the Sragi Sugar Mill of Java, Indonesia as their number  “V” [5].   16½” long and 5” diameter whistle barrel.   Good, ex-loco condition.

 

22 * LMS SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 180.  As carried by the class 3P (later class 3) 2-6-2T loco built at Derby in April 1938 to Lot 139.  Became 40180 at Nationalisation.  A Monument Lane and Aston engine for a long time, it strayed to Nuneaton and Willesden in 1960, before returning to Aston for withdrawal in January 1962.  The plate was rescued from Horwich works when the loco was undergoing overhaul and renumbering. Totally original, unrestored condition.  A rare survivor.

 

23 * BRASS 9” X 5” LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “London & North Eastern Railway 4562 N.B. Loco Co. 1918,” as carried by ex-NBR class B 0-6-0, NBR 158, built by the North British Loco Company’s Atlas Works as works No. 21931 in July 1918.  Designed by Reid, these engines were employed on freight workings.  Became LNER 9158 Class J37 in April 1925; 4562 in September 1946; BR 64562 in March 1949.  A longtime St Margarets loco, it was withdrawn in November 1963 and cut up at Inverurie in May 1964.  Ex-loco condition.

 

24 * COLLECTION OF 24 CAST-IRON SIGNALBOX LEVER DESCRIPTION PLATES.  An interesting selection including “MS&L Up Main, MS&L Dist From P’Form & Bay, LN&W-W Up Main, L&NW-W Up & Sdgs,” etc.  In total 10 with references to MS&L and 10 L&NW.  Reputed to be all from the same signalbox, most likely in the Manchester London Road area.  All have been mounted on a modern wooden board.

 

25 * BRASS INDUSTRIAL NAMEPLATE: ‘MONTY’ as carried by the 0-6-0ST inside cylinder loco built by Hunslet works No. 3692 in 1950 and delivered to NCB Haydock Colliery.  Later transferred to Sutton Manor Colliery and then to Cronton Colliery and appears to have spent all its life working between the three locations.  Scrapped in June 1973 at Cronton by Mee & Cocker Ltd.   29” x 5½” unrestored.  A little pitting to the lettering, good otherwise.

 

26 * LMSR 12” dial non-fusee roundhead OFFICE CLOCK with the initials “LMS” and the number “21912” on the face.  From the Administration Office at Carlisle (Citadel).  Restored to VGC and in good working order.

 

27 * CAST-IRON TRESPASS SIGN: “Great Southern & Western Railway – Notice Pursuant …. (seven lines of text) …. By Order.  Francis S. Ormsby Secretary (undated).  18¾” x 13¾”.  Front restored some time ago, the back in primer.  The company was incorporated in August 1844 and built lines between Dublin – Cork and branches.  It was grouped into the Great Southern Railway in November 1924.

 

28 * ALUMINIUM SINGLE-LINE TABLET: “Long Sutton – Gedney 21” a section on the Spalding No.1 to Sutton Bridge line which was closed on 5th April 1965. Long Sutton signal box was a MR Type 2a design opened in 1922 and was closed in 1965 and prior to that had previously been in use at Kingston's Siding from 1899 until 1920. Gedney signal box was a M&GN Type 1a design opened in 1897, closed in 1964.  Well used condition.

 

29 * GWR ROYAL HOTEL silverplate CAKE AND SANDWICH TRAY manufactured by Elkington.  10¾” x 7½” tray standing on ball feet.  Central handle rising to 7½” high with dividers providing one large section for sandwiches and two smaller sections for cakes.  Coat-of-arms incised on the tray.  The hotel, an integral part of Paddington station in London, was opened in June 1854 originally with 103 bedrooms and 15 sitting rooms and was “the finest in London”; later additions increased capacity to 250 bedrooms.  The hotel was sold by the BRB in 1983 and still operates today, recently having been refurbished.

 

30 * TOTEM: HANWELL.  BR (W) fully-flanged chocolate and cream, basically ex-station condition, the cream- coloured parts somewhat darkened and a small chip between the two letter “L’s”, good otherwise.  An ex-GWR London area station on the West of England main line out of Paddington opened in 1838 and named Hanwell & Elthorne between April 1896 – May 1974.

 

31 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Saechs, Maschinenfabrik Vorm Rich. Hartmann, Actien – Gesellschaft. 1912 Chemnitz No. 3548” as carried by 60 cm gauge 0-8-0T built for the State Railways of Java as No. 1012, designed for use on feeder lines. Later numbered 202T. Subsequently operated at Sragi sugar mill as No. 12 into the 1990s.  Rectangular 14½” x 7”.  Score mark to front, unrestored.  The whistle from this loco is also available at lot 429.

 

32 * CALEDONIAN RAILWAY COMPANY original gold-leaf coat-of-arms transfer mounted on a 24” x 24” board showing the locomotive livery of light blue with white and black lining.  The company was incorporated in July 1845 and grouped into the LMSR 1st January 1923.  Slight surface scratching in the blue painted background, VGC otherwise.

 

33 * SHEDPLATE: 87F LLANELLY (1950 – July 1964).  Grimy ex-loco condition.

 

34 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 92032 as carried by the BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 loco built at Crewe in November 1954 to Order E489.  Originally an ER loco at New England, migration to the LMR at Annesley took place in May 1957, and later Birkenhead from where withdrawn in April 1967.  Scrapped at Cashmore’s, Great Bridge in October 1967.  Unrestored, ex-loco condition.

 

35 * LMS “HAWKSEYE” ALUMINIUM STATION SIGN: KINGSBURY.  48” x 18” the front repainted in red and white, back untouched.  An ex-MR station between Water Orton and Tamworth opened in August 1839, closed in March 1968.

 

36 * CARRIAGE PRINT: WARE, HERTFORDSHIRE by Claude Muncaster from the LNER post-war series (1945-47).  A very scarce print of the River Lee and maltings close to the ex-GER Hertford line.  In an original type glazed wooden frame and in good condition.

 

37 * MIDLAND RAILWAY three-aspect small HANDLAMP with very unusual small domed cap and expansion cone.  Brass plated on reducing cone “Midland Railway Co For Petroleum Only” and Midland Railway 13836B”.  The body side is stamped “MRCo.”  Reservoir stamped MR, LMS burner and reflector.  All glasses intact and brass-rimmed bevel-edged front lens.  VGC.

 

38 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. 7525 Beyer-Garratt Locomotive British Patents 647476-647480 etc., Rhodesian Patents 137/47 etc., South African Patents 2866/47 etc & Foreign Patents – Manchester 1953” as carried by Rhodesian Railways 3ft 6in gauge 2-8-2+2-8-2 Garratt of class 16A no. 647. Later National Railways of Zimbabwe no. 614.  Oval, 10½” x 6½”, face restored, two dents following a life of service.

 

39 * CAST-IRON NOTICE: “Engines Must Not Pass Over This Weighbridge” with the GNR/LNER casting reference O.117.  28½” x 17½” faithfully restored front and back.  An unusual sign, probably from a goods depot in the Spalding area.

 

40 * TOTEM: ST ANNES.  BR (M) fully-flanged maroon.  A few expertly repaired chips, good colour and shine.  An ex-L&YR station originally named Cross Slack when opened by the Preston & Wyre Railway in November 1873, renamed in January 1875.

 

LOTS 41-44: PULLMAN CAR ITEMS

 

41 * PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP in the classical Arcadian style of swags and rams heads. No identity of car, but is of an earlier pattern and used in older cars of 1910 - 1923 vintage. Fitted with a Perspex shade which has seen better days, but original.  Otherwise, the lamp is in good condition.

 

42 * PULLMAN CAR CLOCK with 7” dial as fitted into the bulkhead of certain of the Parlour Cars.  7½” dial, the face with Arabic numerals engraved into stainless steel face with further engraved decoration around the centre.  The bevel-edged front glass is set into a chromed brass bezel.  No company car name discernable.  The clock has been mounted (offset) into a turned wooden base.  Good working order (although no key).

 

43 * PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP.  As lot 41 above but with no shade. Together with  an 8½” tall “Torpedo” style wall lamp in brass again with no shade.  Both items in good condition.  (2)

 

44 * PULLMAN CAR WOODEN PLAQUE: CAR MEDUSA.  8¾” in diameter white-painted wood plaque with gold-leaf transfer showing the Pullman coat-of-arms and the car name.  From the car built as a Kitchen Car in 1924 by the Midland Carriage & Wagon Co.  The plaque was installed in c.1950 when the bulkhead clock it replaced was removed.  Withdrawn in September 1963 and sold to Taylor Bros., Manchester, for scrap in January 1964.  The car worked in “The Golden Arrow” for a number of years after WWII.  Slight cracking and edge flaking of the white paint, but a rare item nevertheless.

45 * TOTEM: WHITSTABLE & TANKERTON.  BR (S) fully-flanged green with black surround.  One small chip on the inner white border otherwise very good with deep colour and shine.  An ex-SE&CR station on the North Kent Coast opened in January 1915.

 

46 * CAST-IRON WAGON REGISTRATION PLATE: “Registered by the N.B. Ry. Coy. 1909 To Carry 12 Tons 21373.”  10¼” x 8” face restored.

 

47 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Montreal Locomotive Works Limited – Builders Montreal Canada 76343 1948” as carried by Indian State Railways 5ft 6 in gauge 2-8-2 No. 8125 of class CWD.  Rectangular with rounded corners, 15” x 8”, lettering a little pitted.  Repainted with red background, back ex-loco condition.

 

48 * ALUMINIUM SINGLE-LINE KEY TOKEN: “Talerddig – Machynlleth”  From the ex-Cambrian line from Shrewsbury and Caersws opened in June 1861.  Good ex-section condition with traces of red paint. The Talerddig to Machynlleth token section came into being on 17th March 1984 when Cemmes Road signal box was closed, and ceased to exist in October 1988 when the line was converted from Electric Token to Radio Electric Token Block. Talerddig signal box was a McKenzie & Holland Type 1 design opened in 1874 for the Cambrian Railways. When closed on 21st October 1988 it was fitted with an 18 lever GWR Vertical Tappet 5-Bar frame. Machynlleth signal box was opened in 1960 and is still a British Railways Western Region Type 37a design fitted with a 50 lever GWR Vertical Tappet 5-Bar frame.

 

49 * CARRIAGE PRINT: SCHIEHALLION, NEAR KINLOCH RANNOCH, PERTHSHIRE by W. Douglas Macleod from the Scottish Region series issued 1956-57.  A view of the loch with mountains, some snow-capped, rising beyond.  In an original type glazed wooden frame.  VGC.

 

50 * ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: WILD BOAR FELL  as carried by the BR class 60 Co-Co 3,100HP diesel-electric locomotive numbered 60019.  Built at Brush Traction Co. Loughborough, works No. 921 and entered service on 3rd December 1990.  The loco was named at Brush Traction before entering traffic with the Trainload Freight sector.  The name was removed in May 1996.  The loco is still in service with English Welsh and  Scottish Railway.  Wild Boar Fell is in the Pennine range near Kirkby Stephen.  Measuring 52” x 10”, the plate is in very good ex-loco condition.  One of the better and more desirable class 60 names.   Paperwork accompanies.

51 * RAILWAY EXECUTIVE Q/R poster: AN ENGINE IS WHEELED with an early 1950s view by Cuneo of Derby Locomotive Works showing 2-6-4T locos under construction.  Undated.  Ref. P1119.  Folded, one or two small edge nicks/creases, good otherwise.

 

52 * LMS Q/R poster: MORECAMBE AND HEYSHAM.  Colourful artwork by Mace showing band playing in the pavilion with bay and pier beyond.  Undated. Ref ERO 53351.  Rolled, one major tear on right hand side and one other small tear, good otherwise.

 

53 * GWR & SR Q/R poster: PLYMOUTH – The Spirit of Drake Lives On.  Artwork by Frank Newbould showing The Sound with yachts sailing in a strong breeze all overshadowed by the ghost of Drake standing over the city.  Dated 1946 and Ref. PW21.  Some discolouration at top and small edge nicks, good otherwise.

71 * GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY SMALL CHINA SUGAR BOWL manufactured by Copeland Stoke-on-Trent with the legend “Great Central Railway Leicester” in black glaze on the side.  2¾” diameter, 1⅜” high in VGC.  Leicester Central was an ex-GCR station opened 15th March 1899 on completion of the “London Extension” but sadly closed on 5th May 1969

 

72 * CAST-IRON CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 5604 as carried by the ex-GWR 0-6-2T “5600” class loco built at Swindon in January 1925 to Lot 228.  Allocated to Landore, Duffryn Yard and finally Llanelly. Withdrawn in November 1962 and cut up by R.S. Hayes at Bridgend.  Repainted front and back.

 

73 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “The Hunslet Engine Co. Ltd. Leeds No. 1493 – 1925” as carried by James Oakes, Pye Hill Colliery, Brick & Pipeworks loco No.1 0-4-0ST outside cylinder loco ex-works in July 1925.  Transferred to NCB ownership in January 1947 remaining at Pye Hill until the late 1960s.  Bought by the MR Society for preservation at Shackerstone in May 1971.  Oval, 11½” x 8¼” with an extra fixing hole below the letter “U” in Hunslet as originally mounted.  Face lightly polished only.

 

74 * ALEXANDRA (NEWPORT) DOCKS & RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP.  Similar to Rhymney Railway Co. lamps, the reducing cone has an inverted semi-circular plate stamped “138.”   The body side is stamped “ANDR 138.”  Wire entrant top handle and metal rear trigger.  All glasses intact and complete with unmarked reservoir, burner stamped “GWR” and reflector.  Bevel-edged front lens with cowl.  Stripped to bare metal ready for painting.  Rare.

 

75 * BRASS INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: STANTON NO. 31 as carried by Stanton Ironworks, Near Ilkeston, Derbyshire, 0-6-0ST outside cylinder built by Hunslet in 1937. 31” x 6” with scalloped corners, face polished.  Complete with matching brass worksplate “The Hunslet Engine Co. Ltd. Leeds No. 1845 – 1937.”  Oval, 11½” x 8¼” unrestored.  No disposal details available except to say that it appears to have been scrapped by 1970.  (2)

 

76 * EARLY LNER CARRIAGE PRINT: HARROGATE – THE NATION’S SPA… by H.G. Gawthorn from the pencil sketch series issued in 1924.  A rare survivor and a marvellous 1920s oval image by the poster artist of the spa with its well-dressed clientele.  Also advertises Knaresborough and the “exceptionally fine scenery.”  In an original type glazed wooden frame.  Minor staining to the bottom right hand corner, but otherwise very good for its age.

 

77 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE embossed with “YM3” (yellow metal) in the inlet valve measuring 11¾” tall x 2¾” diameter with threads at base and inlet valve finished off with a nut at the top of the bowl-shaped head.  A BR replacement for an LNWR-pattern whistle in VGC.

 

78 * ALUMINIUM SINGLE-LINE TABLET: “Holbeach East – Moulton 5” from the ex-M&GN Joint Spalding – Sutton Bridge line which closed to passengers in March 1959.  Good, ex section condition.

 

79 * SHEDPLATE: 89C MACHYNLLETH (1950 – September 1963, then 6F).  A scarce example in unrestored condition.

 

80 * TOTEM: CROSTON.  BR (M) fully-flanged maroon.  A little browning to the lettering, good otherwise.  An ex-L&YR Lancashire station between Burscough Junction and Lostock Hall opened in April 1849.

 

81 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS Built 1889 Horwich.”  Oval 10½” x 6”, face restored only.  A little damage around the right-hand bolthole and rim.  Locos built at Horwich that year were L&YR 2-4-2T “1008” class (20), 0-6-0T “11” class (13) and 4-4-2 “1400” class (20).

 

82 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 46510 as carried by the (LMS) class 2F (later class 2) loco built at Swindon in December 1952 to Lot 394.  Delivered new to Oswestry and allocated there until a brief spell at Machynlleth in 1964 and finally withdrawn in September 1965 from Shrewsbury.  Completely unrestored, ex-loco condition.

 

83 * M&GN JOINT RAILWAY CAST-IRON BRIDGEPLATE: 64.  Oval 13” x 9¾” with the initials “M&GN” cast close to the bottom edge.  Unrestored condition and with traces of blue paint.

 

84 * MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY wood-cased, single-needle, Tyer’s sloping-front permissive BLOCK INSTRUMENT with its original metal plunger, leaf-mechanism.  The permissive mechanism is somewhat worn, but still functional.  The wooden case is stamped “MS&LRy” twice.  The ivorine plates, engraved “Up Line” and “Clipstone Sidings” and the brass Tyer’s makers plate are not original to the instrument, but are typical of the type.  Clean, VGC.  Clipstone Sidings was located between Warsop and Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire.

 

85 * TOTEM: OSWESTRY.  BR (W) half-flanged chocolate and cream.  Some edge chipping including one 1” diameter chip at end of bottom flange, very good colour and shine otherwise.  An ex-Cambrian Railways station, once the centre of this railway’s activities, opened 1st May 1860, closed 7th November 1966.

 

86 * BRASS 9” x 5” TENDER WORKSPLATE: “London & North Eastern Railway 8239 Gateshead Works 1891” as carried by the tender attached during its life to NER 0-6-0 “P1” class 2044 built Darlington November 1899, LNER 2044 class J25 from 1923, 5683 from July 1946 and BR 65683 from October 1949.  Allocated to Neville Hill and finally York.  Withdrawn June 1958.  Face restored only.

 

87 * LNER silverplate MUFFIN DISH manufactured by Walker & Hall.  Three-part design with base, insert and lid with knob atop.  7” diameter x 5½” high with “LNER” scrolled initials incised into side of lid.  A rare item.

 

88 * SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: ROUGH CASTLE.  74” x 11” wooden with metal letters.  Face restored in white and black to VGC.  An ex-North British Railway box located on the Edinburgh to Glasgow (via Falkirk High) line closed in December 1971.

 

89 * ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY F. MOORE showing GWR “Star” class 4-6-0 loco No. 4062 “Malmesbury Abbey” and train on the “10:30 Limited.”  The loco was built at Swindon in May 1922 Works No. 2916, Lot No. 217, elbow steam pipes were fitted in March 1950 and finally withdrawn in November 1956.  The painting was commissioned and used by the GWR as a colour illustration to the official publication “The 10:30 Limited” a copy of which accompanies.  35½” x 17” in modern frame.  VGC.  (2)

 

90 * SR ENAMEL TARGET STATION SIGN: CHRIST’S HOSPITAL.  36” x 13” mounted on original backing board.  Some edge rusting, good otherwise.  An ex-LB&SCR station opened in April 1902 on the Three Bridges – Littlehampton line, once the junction for West Grinstead and Cranleigh.

 

91 * LNER CAST-IRON NOTICE: “Trains Must Not Pass This Board Without Permission From the Shunters.”  Casting number O.120, “LNER” initials clearly shown in bottom left-hand corner.  Reputed to be from Spalding goods yard on the ex-GN&GE Joint Line.  26” x 21¾” restored front and back. 

 

92 * CARRIAGE PRINT: LOCH LINNHE AND MORVEN HILLS, WESTERN HIGHLANDS by Jack Merriott from the Scottish Region series issued 1956-57.  A moody Scottish scene of loch with cloud-covered hills  in the background.  In an original type glazed wooden frame.  VGC.

 

93 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “North British Locomotive Coy. Ltd. Glasgow 1919 No. 22113 Hyde Park Works” from the ROD 2-8-0 No. 2018 ex works April 1919 and almost immediately went into service with the GWR as their 3009.  An “MB” type boiler was fitted in August 1929.  The loco was withdrawn in June 1948.  Circular, 7¾” diameter, unrestored.

 

94 * SHEDPLATE: 72E BARNSTAPLE JUNCTION (1950 – September 1963, then 83F).  Ex-loco condition with BR (S) and E within triangle cast into back.  A rare example, seen only once at auction previously.

 

95 * LNER DOUBLE-SIDED ENAMEL LAMP TABLET: ELMSWELL brown on cream, 16” x 6” in good condition.  Elmswell is situated on the ex-GER Bury St Edmunds – Ipswich line.

 

96 * SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 47583 as carried by ex-LMS class 3 (later 3F) 0-6-0T loco originally numbered 16666 when built by Hunslet in 1928 works No 1607, lot No. 58.  Renumbered 7583 in 1934 and became BR 47583.  An Agecroft and latterly Bank Hall engine where withdrawn in March 1963 and cut up at Horwich in May the same year.  Restored front and back some time ago.

 

97 * NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP with a rectangular brass plate “North Eastern Railway” on body side.   Stamped in reducing cone “NER Co.,” the outside copper lens cone is stamped “NER RHB.”   Wire entrant top handle, brass side catch, wire rear handles.  All glasses intact and complete with reservoir stamped “NER”, burner and reflector.  Good condition.

 

98 * BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Hudswell Clarke & Co. Ltd. Railway Foundry No. 1715 Leeds 1940” as carried by 0-4-0ST outside cylinder No. 6 ex-works October 1940 to GKN (Cwmbran), Cwmbran Ironworks.  In August 1966 the loco went to John Cashmore at Newport Docks as their yard shunter, but loco was eventually cut up.  No precise date found.  Engraved oval 13” x 8¼” with a long scrape along the centre.  Unrestored.

 

99 * SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS dual language BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “675 19A” as carried by SAR 3ft 6 in gauge 4-8-2 No. 675 of class 19A. Built Swiss Locomotive Works 3300 of 1929.  Oval, 20¾” x 14½”, unrestored.

 

100 *   LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: COLDSTREAM GUARDSMAN as carried by the LMS 6100 “Royal Scot” class 6P-7P 4-6-0 locomotive originally numbered 6114.  Built at the North British Locomotive Company Queens Park Works Glasgow, works No. 23609 in September 1927.  The name had been fitted to the locomotive by April 1928 apparently without ceremony.  Rebuilt with a No. 2A boiler and double-chimney in 1946 and renumbered 46114 at Nationalisation. A long-time Edge Hill (Liverpool) loco, transfers to Llandudno Junction, Holyhead and Willesden, took place in 1961-1963.  Withdrawn from service 28th September 1963. The cast brass plate, which has been lightly face polished only, is some 52” long and in excellent order.  One of the best “Royal Scot” class names to be found.  BR receipts and paperwork accompany.

 

101 *   BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Nasmyth Wilson & Co. Limited Manchester No. 1582 1930 Patricroft” as carried by East African Railways metre gauge 4-8-0 of class 24, no 2457.Originally Kenya-Uganda Rly class EB3 no.218.  Triangular- shaped, 14” x 5½”, unrestored and with heavily encrusted paint.

 

102 *   CARRIAGE PRINT: BRIDGE OF BALGIE, GLEN LYON, PERTHSHIRE by Edward Lawson from the Scottish Region series issued in 1956-67.  A colourful view of the bridge, tree-lined river and mountains rising in the background.  In an original type glazed wooden frame in VGC.

 

103 *   MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY POCKET WATCH engraved on rear “M.S. & L.Ry., AN6, 77” inside are the initials “TRA” and the number “43369.” A white face with Roman numerals, second hand, the initials “MS&LRy” and the makers name “Adkins & Sons Coventry.”   The watch is wound by a key which has the number “6” embossed and is attached to the watch by twine.  The MS&LR was formed by the amalgamation of smaller companies on 1st January 1847.  The company was renamed “Great Central Railway” on 1st August 1897 and grouped into the LNER on 1st January 1923.  Appears to be in full working order.  Very rare.

 

104 *   GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY wooden-cased pegging BLOCK INSTRUMENT with a Trafolite plate at top showing “Down Slow From South.”  “GCRy” stamped into top of case and “GCRy” within scroll on indicator face.  A much sought after example in ex-box condition.

 

105 *   LMS “HAWKSEYE” ALUMINIUM STATION SIGN: TEBAY.  48” x 18” the face beautifully restored in maroon and cream, the back untouched. A classic location on the West Coast Main Line, at the start of the long haul up to Shap Summit..  An ex-LNWR station opened in 1852 by the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway, closed by BR in July 1968.  VGC.

 

106 *   BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Hawthorns & Co. Leith Engine Works – No. 15 1847.”  There are no records to confirm, but it is thought that the plate was fitted to an 0-4-0 built for the Edinburgh, Perth & Dundee Railway – later part of the North British Railway.  32 x 6½” at widest.  Small loss to the “5” and pitting to some of th
